About NOJC

The Waseda University New Orleans Jazz Club (NOJC) was founded in 1957. Our ultimate mission is to understand New Orleans Traditional Jazz through listening and rehearsing.

As an extracurricular activity, our yearly schedule is ;

-April till July) introduce Traditional Jazz to freshmen, form several bands,

-August) summer camp

-November) perform at the Waseda Festival

-December) the annual recital

-February to March) visit New Orleans by voluntary members

-Throughout the year) rehearse and perform in the club

Chronology

1957, The Waseda University New Orleans Jazz Club (NOJC) was founded.

1981, The first visit to New Orleans by voluntary members.

2005, Invited Mari Watanabe New Orleans Quintet for the guest session of NOJC's 44th annual recital. There was also the purpose of collecting donations for Hurricane Katrina.

2006, Invited Gregg Stafford New Orleans Quintet for the guest session of NOJC's 45th annual recital. There was also the purpose of collecting donations for Hurricane Katrina.

2011, Invited Michael White band for the guest session of NOJC's 50th annual recital.

 

We are proud to say that several of our Alumni are notable figures in the Traditional Jazz scene; Keiko and Yoshio Toyama, Ryoichi Kawai, and Yoichi Kimura to name a few. Today, generations later, we continue playing jazz music.
